Both the men’s and women’s UCF soccer teams were unceremoniously eliminated from the Conference USA tournament on Wednesday night.

The women entered the C-USA Tournament with a number two seed but were upset by the seventh-seeded, UAB 2-1 after the Blazers scored in the 104th minute to shock the Golden Knights.

UCF’s men’s team fell even harder, losing 5-0 to the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa. The Golden Knights finished their season at 6-9-2.  For more, you can read on:

UAB 2, UCF 1

Freshman Danya Barsalona scored in the 104th minute to lead No. 7 seed UAB to a 2-1 double overtime upset of  No. 2 seed UCF in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Conference USA Women’s Soccer Championship at Westcott Field on Wednesday night.

The Blazers (7-11-0) advance to the semifinals, where they will take on the winner of the East Carolina/Memphis match on Friday night. The Golden Knights (11-6-2) were eliminated from the tournament.

After a scoreless first half in which UAB outshoot UCF by a 7-5 margin, senior Jennifer Williams put the Blazers on the board. Williams collected a rebound in the box and shot the ball into the right corner in the 56th minute.

UAB’s tally lit a spark to the UCF offense as the Golden Knights recorded four unanswered shots. In the 70th minute, senior Jessalyn Withers (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie HS) served a corner kick into the box. Senior Kristin Bilby (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS) took a shot that was saved by goalkeeper Katie Forbis.

Senior Roberta Pelarigo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) capitalized on UCF’s renewed attack in the 85th minute when she knocked in a header off a corner kick by freshman Becca Thomas (Burlington, Wash./Homeschooled).

Although both teams found opportunities in the final minutes of regulation, neither could put the game away, forcing overtime.

UAB and UCF went without a shot in the first extra session. Barsalona scored on the only shot by either team in the second overtime. Williams fed the ball through the middle to Barsalona, who one-timed it past UCF junior goalkeeper Jennifer Manis (Pensacola, Fla./Washington HS).

The Blazers and Golden Knights finished the evening with 13 shots each, but UCF held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Forbis made four saves, while Manis had six.

Tulsa 5, UCF 0

Junior Todd Goddard recorded two goals as No. 3 seed Tulsa defeated No. 6 seed UCF, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Conference USA Men’s Soccer Championship at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.

Tulsa opened up the scoring in the 25th minute. Sophomore Joe Salem netted his first goal of the season from 10 yards with assists to senior Matt Thomas and sophomore Eric Defreitas. The Golden Hurricane added a second goal by freshman Joe Parada ten minutes later. The play started when freshman Hunter Christiansen passed the ball to junior Eric Burkholder, who crossed it to Parada at the goal mouth.

Even as Defreitas added a third goal for TU in the 53rd minute, the Golden Knights’ offense pressured the hosts and tested Tulsa goalkeeper Tyrel Lacey, forcing him to make four saves in the second half.

Despite UCF’s efforts, Goodard netted the first of his two goals in the 63rd minute with the second coming 10 minutes later.

Although Tulsa outshot the Golden Knights 24-16 during the match, corner kicks were even at six each. Lacey made seven saves, while UCF junior goalkeeper Brian Pope had six.

The Golden Hurricane improved to 9-9-0 on the year and advance to the tournament semifinals, where they face No. 4 seed Kentucky on Friday. The Golden Knights, who fell to 6-9-2, were eliminated.
